14 Days Of Isolation
Basic Film Idea
Guy has been trapped inside a Science classroom for two weeks, over which time he develops an imaginary friend called Jacob. One day, he falls asleep and dreams that he is in Crosby. He realises that the statues surrounding the beach resemble him, alone and cut off from outer society. The dream switches to a nightmare in Formby, where Guy is confronted by a mysterious psychotic character. He wakes up to find Jacob gone and to his surprise he escapes from the classroom, only to find the same man from his dream advancing towards him with a knife in his hand. He runs down some nearby stairs towards a door. To his horror, the door is locked, and he looks back to see the psycho standing nearby at the bottom of the stairs.
The film ends with a cliff-hanger. This provokes questions such as will Guy escape in time, or will the psycho murder him?
Main Film Influences
My main influences in the film are from The Shining, and There Will Be Blood. The corridor scene from The Shining relates to my film and I have used it to similar effect. In the scene from the movie, the girls appear suddenly out of nowhere, and in the scene from my film, the psycho appears visibly in the background of the shot, walking closer and closer at an increasing pace.
In There Will Be Blood, the opening scenes are tense and full of suspense, but with hardly any dialogue. In my film, especially the second classroom, and the Crosby and Formby scenes, this is openly demonstrated, but with a difference.
Soundtrack
I believe a great soundtrack is crucial to the success of my film. Instead of being dominated by loud, heavy music, I have instead chosen orchestral pieces, and soft rock songs characterised by violins and clean guitars, borrowed from other stunning movies.
Directorial Influences
Sergio Leone is my main directorial influence, as he has directed some classic films and used the techniques listed above to great effect.
Artistic Influences
Anthony Gormley is my main artistic influence, as my film features a confined and often isolated environment.
Artwork Idea
My artwork idea involves three separate sacks, each containing different body parts.
A boot protrudes from the first sack, trying to kick a nearby door suspended from a rope, which drapes down from the top of the picture. This represents anger and rage.
A hand reaching for a key, and a mouth trying to bite an apple are the contents of the remaining sacks. The hand represents isolation and the desperation to escape and find the key, while the mouthpart represents hunger due to lack of food. The objects are always just a fraction too far away for the body parts to get to. Three clocks are also present, one at 11 am, one at 4 pm, and finally one at 9 pm. These demonstrate the passing of time.
